You can't assume that a guys forum name is his in game name. I am not playing as 'Pretext' for example.

General Principles -
If you have a problem with a name, report in game, don't start a war here. If the GM's deem the name is alright, leave it at that. Don't bring it on to the forum. If you have had your name changed, it is horrendous I know. Take it like Conan would; get up, dust yourself down and play on. Coming on here for revenge or just complaining solves nothing.

I am personaly named on my main differently, just because the class turned to be more fitting for me than Ilverai, so usualy in game I am Linemi. Now to add on keeping server clean, thats a good initiative. There are only two RP servers so far, it is good idea to keep them clean, as there is enough playgrounds for all who dont feel RP as part of RP game (ah, the irony).

As for not enough RP in game, if you feel bored, seek Linemi in search and if I am in Conarch, I am probably sitting in local inn and hoping for some roleplay to happen, which at times really does. Just dont be shy, cause Cimmerians have little understanding for shyness.

Default Naming issue..

And just how do you people know where the name originated from? Unless the name is something extraordinary or totally absurd, there will always be similar names with references to books, movies whatever.

I created my character 8 years ago. I really thought about the name for long and how my char became known with the name. 4 years later I read a fantasy novel and the name popped up, does that make my name illegal?

Its a name, nothing more. In a online game where there can be only one particular name, these issues always pop up. I can only understand the reporting issue if someone is actually roleplaying some known character, but someone who can create a unique background for a "known" name is okay imo.

I chose archangel as a name for my POM, I was having a bad day and had brain freeze. I cant believe the amount of crap Ive had about it. Can I petition to get it changed to something more in keeping with Howards Law?

I really dont want to level another just to be accepted in the community.

You have to take into consideration that just because names are used in movies/books are copywrighted because not all are.

Beowulf for example.

Beowulf , written in Old English sometime before the tenth century A.D., describes the adventures of a great Scandinavian warrior of the sixth century.
A rich fabric of fact and fancy, Beowulf is the oldest surviving epic in British literature.

Beowulf exists in only one manuscript. This copy survived both the wholesale destruction of religious artifacts during the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII and a disastrous fire which destroyed the library of Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (1571-1631).

The poem still bears the scars of the fire, visible at the upper left corner of the photograph. The Beowulf manuscript is now housed in the British Library, London.

Historical names are allowed, even if there has been some movie about them.

not if you look at some of the names Funcom are using as NPC names.

for instance, theres a NPC in stygia named Arses......

had a friend that made a toon with that name just for giggles and no more then 10 minutes after he got to tortage he had a GM on him because the name aparently was to vulgar..... i mean comon, it wasn't even on a RP server....

i dont think funcom HAS a real naming poilcy. they just expect the GM's to figure it out as they go.

A few people were chatting about this over OOC a couple of days ago.

I said it before to a guy who posed the question, how do you pick an acceptable name? Common sense I replied.

If someone is naming themselves after a really well known fantasy character they are really moving out of the grey zone and into trouble, if someone has got a name that isn't even a name just letters or some kind of abusive slang, again you'll be in trouble.

If you've given yourself a catchy nickname that has no basis at all in lore or the world itself, you might or might not be asked to change it but you've got to expect some grief from certain players who don't appreciate it, in other words your in a grey zone.

Your best bet is to pick a name thats just a name, with no other connotations than that.

Here is a good link if anyone is struggling, a lore based name generator.

Im on a roleplaying server and i like to roleplay, But i for one dont mind peoples names i dont care what they are, if it is something i dont like i just wont RP with that charcter. I think the main reason people complain so much is because they are jealous of the name.

Its not that difficult to ignore someone, after all this is suposed to be a mature comunity. i would say about 45% of people on RP servers dont intend to roleplay. (Which i think is bad considering they joined a roleplaying server)

Names dont matter aslong as they are actual names, and not something like batman. i mean comeon im not the only person in the world with my name. there is about 500000 other people with the same name as me. just because someone has the same name as an fantasy charcter does not mean they are the actual charcter.....

I take it this naming policy refers to Guild names as well? We have some stinkers on Corinthia at the moment

I am sure you can petition to get your name changed. Petitions are taking ages though.

I think guild names are meant to follow the rules. I have seen a few questionable ones. What players need to think is would we call ourselves that? Imagine going into battle with your guild name as a rallying cry, or telling some one your guild name, would it sound reasonable?
