Just thpught I'd post this SS. Managed to get hold of a GM today and asked him about the naming policy on RP servers. You can see for himself what the answer is. I've edited the name so as not to get anyone in trouble, but I think people should see this non the less

That's sad to see..considering in the manual they say about naming characters in the spirit of the world setting...

It's all well and good them saying that the community will police it themselves..but how?Do we get given miraculous name changing powers?Are we allowed to harrass and force these leet idiots out?
Game has so much potential and FC can't be bothered to keep their supposed RP servers free from the idiots...shame on them!

Well to be honest I looked at the message on the screenshot and the GM didn't say they weren't changing/banning names they just said the community polices itself in other words they reply on the community to report dodgy names. I'd still expect them to change or ban the names if a player was reported.

Exactly, they don't go trawling for dodgy names, that's down to the community.

Don't forget some of this is about copyright infringement, they are not going to just forget it.

In fact it is more sad than it looks.

It apears I lost a guildie (who decided to not pay anymore for such aproach) to unfair duel with GM. As the guildie was passionately reporting names, a GM finaly contacted her. She was told that they wont do anything about it unless the name is really offensive. So "UsuckNoob" might perhaps get banned, but "Lolator", "Schumacher", "Frodlo" and imagine what else wont.

I still wish that someone from FunCom was actualy (from time to time) visiting these forums, but it doesnt seem so.

But we want answers. So here goes:

Funcom, we ask, what sense does it make to create Roleplay servers and then let them rot, without assuring quality roleplay enviroment?

Well, this is pretty much the approach most MMORPGs take. Funcom just seems very... honest about it. What do they have to lose? Just ad "RP" to a couple of servers and forget about them - it's cheaper than policing them, and players like it better than no RP servers at all.
Perhaps one day there will be a MMORPG developer really caring about those of their costumers who choose to RP, unlikely as that may sound. This is not it.

Well they indicated some servers as RP so if you want to RP go there. If you dont want to: dont.

The problem that you are refering to is just names, not RP. Just because someone doesnt have a "proper" Conan name does not mean he is unwilling to roleplay.
But eh... im pretty sure you guys have already decided that some names are Taboo regarding of whether the player is a roleplayer or not.

Mind you im not including offensive names, those I disagree with.

That's because generally they say something along the lines of "lol Rp gtfo noob"

That's why I don't even attempt to RP with them, I pity anyone stupid enough to have to steal a name and not understand the concept of RP infront of a server, but they can ingame.

The thing is, non-rp names are the most glaring example of what alck of policing does to RP, and one of the most immersion-breaking. Roleplaying is all about immersion, after all. If Funcom doesn't police names on RP servers, we can be pretty damn sure they won't do anything about, for example, OOC in /say and other annoying things.

That has nothing to do with the name.
If the guy is an idiot he will remain an idiot regardless of his name.
And I have seen players with good RP names behaving like idiots spamming the channels, level 80 ganking level 20s (deliberately chasing them and killing them) etc.
Hell I even saw someone storytelling Conan vs Orcs in the general chat channels a few days ago.

Thats nothing to do with the name, just the player behind it.

And yes: I dont have a "proper" RP name. But if you try to rp with me you will get a proper response. I will even stop my quests to RP since its a lot more fun that just killing stuff.
