Default Ranger and ranged combat

I must admit, although I am a "ranger" I do most of my pvping in melee. I find it impossible to kite in AoC.

I usually start out like this: mezz shot - pin down - salvo
By the time my salvo is done the pin down has worn out and the player is usually right in front of me, depending on the class I fight, it is already impossible to run away now, he will keep on attacking and hitting me, even if Im 4, 5 meters in front of him, some classes will even slow me down just with hitting me, this means Im dead already.
But even if the player wont slow me down, I just cant get a distance between him and me.
I can use up all my stamina to run away, the 2, 3 seconds it takes me to turn around and fire up salvo will be enough to have the player right in front of me again.
Is it possible to kite in AoC? Am I just too stupid? Whats the secret? Will this get better with higher lvls?

So what I usually do, as metioned above after starting with mezz shot - pin down - salvo, I will just swap to sword and work myself through my melee combos. Works out fine with most classes I fight but it just doesnt feel like I am playing a ranger.

I love stalking my victims and attacking them when they're in a bad position where it will take them some time to reach me (of course most will just run away instead) but I think the ranger doesnt offer as much as it could, a lot of possibilities are unused. I would for example rather have lower dps and instead be able to attack from further range, have some combos that can be used in stealth or some real ccs)

Maybe Im lacking some of the most important skills needed to succeed as a ranger, but if a ranger is played the way I am doing it, and right now I
cant find any way to play this class differently (specially in pvp), then I must say that something here is terribly wrong!

I dont want to bitch about the class or the game and I havent even reached lvl 30 with my ranger so things might change a lot. Basically Im just asking for some tips and some information about how other rangers are playing or were playing around lvl25. Thanks!

In pvp I usally open by placing a leghold trap in front of me, then pindown unload some combos and they would be in the leghold trap at the point...so i just retreat to my range again and do some more combos.
This is a best case scenario though, considering alot time the leghold breaks and if they bunnyhop well its basically back to the graveyard. But we also have some "oh ****" combos such as cripple/immolation and clear the field, just play smart and think fast.

Ok if you used a crossbow and said it was hard kiting, but with bowspec? Its not hard... You have enough CC to make the cooldowns go around.

Use your trap's. If he gets stuck in your trap after your first salvo then you should be able to hit him with all the range you got. Even pin him down again. Knockback is a god send - spec for it if you can!

You can even drop the trap while you run away from him. That will stop him dead in his track. Keep on runing until you get close to max range - then turn and release your rage!

You can switch to sword / shield and use incapacitating stabs combo to slow down enemy (also throw it back if you have the clear the field feat). Never tried it though:P

By the way the back jump thing (pressing the "back" key 2 times) is a nice move but unfortunately gets some points from stamina.
