But a crossbow is a tricky weapon, reloading takes time, and the archer must be more or less standing still to have any hope of reloading it.

A longbow using arrows with metal arrowheads in a special shape penetrates a full plate at the front, goes through the body and leaves the plate at the back. A longbow is a horrible weapon. Note that different arrowheads where used for different damage. A crossbow was able to go through a shield and plate leaveing wounds like modern dum-dum bullets or pumpguns. They are just slow but more accurate though...
Edit: 1139 in europe bows and crossbows have been prohibitet to use against chistian people. The damage was just "unholy". It was only allowed to use them aginst nonbelievers
But i think the OP was missing the typical fast paced kiting gameplay of rangers.
