For T2 around 50/52% mitigation should be enough for pretty much everything. There is no bosses in T2 where you have to solo tank. So even if you're a bit squishier you're more useful if you can grab aggro easier, even if it means releasing it early.
as i said, i have not too many problems with aggro... we just did a guild run in w1 yesterday, and i've been able to steal aggro from a well geared dt, if i pushed it really hard, so i don't think i have so many problems on that part...
maybe he was slacking a bit....
but i never lost aggro from a dps, so i'm quite happy about the aggro....

but on the other side, i felt i was getting too much damage, comparing it with my dt when he had more or less the same equipment...

EDIT

sorry for off topic, i'm using this thread too to learn a bit about guard...

Hahaha, I know - I just never look at it when I choose gear for the encounter. I tank mostly in raid gear anyway.

I think I'll use something like this:
http://aoc.yg.com/feat-planner?class...015-21,4013-21

When I get enough mitigation I'll switch for fortitude or something else which increases damage or threat.

IMO Fortitude is the last thing you'll want for aggro - gives about 450 combat rating

Well, 450 combat rating is better than 3% mitigation if you have enough mitigation from gear.

First of all, if I sounded like I was criticizing your aggro, let me apologize, that was not intended. However, no matter how good the player is, the more aggro his build has, the more aggro he will have . Sometimes a heavy aggro build happens to be required, and sometimes not. It's a matter of balance between "you" and the tanks around.

No doubt, a DT starts to have insane survivability around 55% mitigation (same as guard with >60%, as long as the DT can hit the boss ofc), a guard is squishy around this value.

no need to apologize, i just wanted to make clear that i'm pretty happy with the aggro i can generate, given that i have a rather poor equipment and almost no AA...

well... i already expected something like this, since dt was made to use heavy armor, not full plate, but i thought that the difference was smaller...
i'll keep doing low tier raids, and see how it goes when i have better armor... it was the reason why i rolled a new character anyway, 'cos all my other characters would gain very little from t1/t2...

I tanked a bit yesterday with the polearm build and it worked ok. I lost aggro to other soldiers, but I guess that's expected.

I did feel a bit weak, mobs hit me very hard.
How much mitigation should I get to actually manage to tank without loosing so much health?

100 % ?

More seriously, there are 3 cap, >50, >55 and >60. You'll notice difference by reaching those caps.
