Default Framerate

Hello!

I have quite a good computer, and most games run really smoothly, except AoC. No matter what I do, framerate always drops to 20 or less where there are many characters and particles (even with particles limited to myself), like in raids or mini-games.

My spec:
  • i7 950.
  • 12Gb DDR3.
  • Geforce GTX570.
  • SSD OCZ Vertex2.
  • Windows 7 x64.

Can anyone run the game with, e.g., 60 FPS minimum? Please tell me how.

Get SSD or disable shadows

Well, it seems that, after disabling shadows, the game runs smoother now, but not much.

Have you updated latest video drivers?

Yes, I have the latest driver. But, ever since I started playing this game 2 years ago, I've never been able to have it run smooth at all times. Framerate has always been very unstable.

And, every time I have asked for advice regarding this, everybody asked the same questions to me, and never stated that he could run the game between 60 and 120 fps, for example. So I suppose it's just bad optimization afterall.

All I was asking is if anyone ever had fps no less than 60, which would be the ideal minimum framerate. But every time I play in a raid, or just because it's a certain "laggy" area, fps drop a lot and mouse won't respond so well.

I'm just used to playing games at more than 100 fps, that's why this game annoys me sometimes.

I doubt that since i had the same and now even as i have upgraded my system i do drop down to 20fps in raids with everything on max. In a boss fight when there are lot of particle effects everywhere.

The game is just baddly coded but as i have played from the lauch i know things are much better on how smooth the game runs. Even though you drop to the 20fps at those certain points the rest of the game runs so much smoother than it used to. This is just something i doubt they will never fix and we just have to suffer for since the game is best that there is. If you feel different and find some other game better there is a solution for you.

AoC is very dependant on CPU performance and it uses about 1,5 core so single core performance is key to keep playable framerates in raids and cities.
You have good CPU but it runs rather low clocks - do some reading on overclocking and you should be able to get it in 3,8GHz region without major problems (possibly even on stock voltage). Also try to figure out if your memory timings are otimal (sometimes they are set very loose by default).
Fot example I play on AMD PhenomII X2 and on default 3,2GHz i had to play medium-low details after taking it to 3,8GHz i can play medium-high settings without major dips in frame rates.

Good luck!

Hyper-threading on or off?

And would overclocking the graphics card help too?

I have the XFX7970 i7 etc and you get ridiculous graphical performance in everything except AoC

It's a fairly older game now, the new engine was a hodge onto already existing poor code quality. It doesn't support multiple cores very effectively if at all and is terrible for not loading all the required npc/ objects and etc very fast while pvping resulting in stammering when close to maxed (spell particles blind the he outa me and aoc is particularly user unfriendly particles)

Basically the limiting factor is the games production. Even though shadows are pathetic 2d quality they slow more than they should the trees and grass are ALL two dimensional if you turn round they turn with you!!!

Complete resource hog
